How It Works
Commissioning a Thorell instrument is a direct, structured process.
Each build begins from an established approach and is refined through consultation, ensuring the instrument remains coherent in both structure and response.
1. Selecting an Instrument
Most commissions begin with one of the core models:
— Red Sky — acoustic archtop
— Cooker — modern performance archtop
— Custom Atelier — commissioned instruments beyond standard models
Each provides a structural and tonal foundation for the build.
2. Consultation & Specifications
Details are developed through direct communication.
This may include:
— Material selection
— Neck profile and scale length
— Electronics and pickup configuration
— Finish and visual appointments
Decisions are made in relation to the instrument as a whole, maintaining structural integrity and consistent response.
3. Payment Structure
Each instrument is built specifically for the commissioning player.
A place in the build schedule is secured once the initial payment is received.
— Initial Payment — 30%
Secures placement in the build schedule and begins material preparation
— Build Payment — 30%
Due when the instrument enters active construction
— Final Payment — 40%
Due upon completion prior to delivery
4. Build Schedule
Instruments are built individually in sequence.
Typical completion time is 12–18 months, depending on schedule and complexity.
Updates are provided at key stages of the build.
5. Completion & Delivery
Upon completion and final setup, the remaining balance is paid.
The instrument is then prepared for delivery or collection.
Each guitar leaves the workshop fully inspected and ready for professional use.
